Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Manager

Summary:

This key role will lead the development and implementation of SHE policies, procedures and safety culture within N-Gen and any partnerships.  The N-Gen SHE Manager provides support, expert advice, guidance and assistance on SHE matters to ensure the N-Gen business understands, and is able to comply with, all relevant SHE legislation, company policies, procedures and the N-Gen Integrated Management System (IMS).

The SHE Manager will work in partnership with N-Gen colleagues and project teams to develop and embed effective risk controls and support them in embedding safety excellence and positive safety behaviours. This will include but not limited to COMAH, HV electrical connections and switchgear, hazardous substance consents and ongoing liaison and relationship development with the Health and Safety Executive, local authorities and the Environment Agency.

Key responsibilities:

  • Providing a high level of SHE leadership across N-Gen and partners
  • Ensuring N-Gen colleagues and contractors fully understand and comply with all N-Gen SHE policies and procedures, and support N-Gen managers and colleagues to ensure safety risks and the company IMS are effectively monitored and controlled.
  • Leading the development and maintenance of effective positive and proactive relationships with all levels of internal and external customers and partners, ensuring a collegiate, respectful and inclusive approach to SHE is taken at all times.
  • Leading N-Gen’s activities to develop positive safety behaviours across all levels of the business, including the management of behaviour change programmes and working with the business to embed sustained and continuous improvements.
  • Providing advice and guidance on all aspects of SHE risk management as part of a holistic approach to help the business plan and deliver work activities safely.
  • Leading and facilitating the timely investigation of injuries, incidents and near misses to accurately identify root causes and determine appropriate learnings, corrective and/or preventive actions
  • Identifying areas of improvement and implementing solutions and actions to mitigate SHE risk
  • Undertaking audits and producing reports and actions for any non-conformances
  • Adhering to all applicable statutory and company reporting requirements
  • Supporting the delivery of SHE training to colleagues and partners
  • Taking an active lead in ensuring SHE communications are effectively disseminated, including briefing SHE strategy and learnings to colleagues and partners, including toolbox talks
  • Working closely with N-Gen’s Operations and Maintenance (O&M) manager and team to support implementation of O&M procedures and risk controls, including development or introduction of new or innovative techniques and materials, or appointing new maintenance and construction contract partners.
  • Leading and attending internal and external meetings on behalf of the team as and when required, including presenting and speaking at conferences throughout the UK
  • Supporting the wider N-Gen business to ensure SHE standards are maintained and constantly reviewed and improved.
  • Any other duties that may reasonably be requested by the Senior Leadership to support the effective identification and management of health and safety risks within the business
  • You will play a key leadership role, establishing, shaping and developing our SHE processes, technology and continuous improvement plan, in line with the wider company objectives and goals. As a key leader in the organisation, you will be jointly accountable with all other colleagues in demonstrating N-Gen’s core values of integrity, honesty, respect, trust, teamwork and collaboration

And will lead by example in demonstrating these values at all times.

Skills and experience required:

  • Experience of managing and working in a high performing team to provide SHE leadership and support to colleagues, partners and stakeholders
  • Understanding and experience of the safety management principles required to safely work with pressure systems, electrical installations, pipelines and civil works/construction activities including COMAH, HV electric and high-pressure gas/hydrogen
  • Wide knowledge of SHE legislation and risk control relating to the construction and O&M of hydrogen production, storage and distribution sites.
  • Extensive experience in identification of risks and assessment of controls using a range of techniques and approaches in a nascent hydrogen market
  • Experience in accident & incident investigation procedures to identify immediate and underlying causes of accidents and lessons learnt.
  • Knowledge of the application of behaviour change principles to develop safety behaviours
  • Significant experience of working collaboratively with business stakeholders to deliver safety excellence
  • Proven experience of supporting businesses to develop safe behaviours and deliver positive cultural change
  • Previous experience in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, enforcing authorities and principal contactors
  • Good IT capabilities with competence in the use of Microsoft Office
  • Understanding of and experience working in an emerging company with a small, highly focussed team.
  • Gas industry knowledge and experience preferable
  • A proven track record of working collaboratively with a senior team, demonstrating high integrity and values.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively within a focussed team environment.
  • Strong communicator at all levels both internally and externally, able to competently and effectively present to key stakeholders, including at board level.
  • Self-starter with solid organisational skills including attention to detail, prioritising workload, meeting deadlines and multi-tasking.
  • Ability to meet challenging deadlines and prioritise tasks efficiently.
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of the challenges of climate change and decarbonisation including being up to speed with government policy, funding streams and long-term strategies.
  • Work flexibly to meet the needs of the role including working outside normal hours if required and travel to other locations within the UK.
  • Valid UK driving licence.
  • Right to work in the UK.

Qualifications required

  • NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent (Essential)
  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent (Desirable)
  • Membership of a relevant professional Health and Safety or Environmental institution, at minimum of Graduate level
  • Internal audit qualified (desirable)
