Commercial Business Development Director

We’ve looking for a Commercial Business Development Director to join our growing senior team

Operating within the Business & Market Development function of N-Gen, the Commercial Business Development Director will be accountable for the project investment pipeline including; origination of new project investment opportunities, creation of project bids, assessment of a project’s risks and rewards and support for the delivery of projects.  You will foster and work to maintain an entrepreneurial growth culture throughout the company and across all teams and work functions.   

You will help to shape the company’s long-term objectives and develop plans to meet them. Contributing to the development of our Market & Business Development Strategy as part of this overall strategic plan, you will lead the implementation and delivery of the strategy to deliver our corporate targets. This will involve developing and managing a 10 year portfolio of projects including immediate, small one to one projects and scale projects, directly linked to power and grid connections, to match the scale and growth agenda required to meet our long-term objectives.  

Accountabilities and Responsibilities:  

​UK wide market and client intelligence  

  • Tracking emerging markets and trends – covering industry and transport, government, regulations, competitors, market sectors, technology – whole system options.  
  • Researching and identifying new markets and developing business opportunities.  
  • Researching and Targeting potential clients.  
  • Managing key client relationships and building new ones.  

Commercial and financial development and evaluation  

  • Working with clients and third parties to develop conceptual, complex multi-site and multi-client energy propositions, including production, transportation, storage and overall resilience.  
  • Leading on the commercial and financial evaluation of prospective projects.   
  • Creating and presenting detailed business cases for project development and investment.  
  • Negotiating complex service level agreements to manage risk.  
  • Conducting complex financial analysis to determine appropriate pricing and risk management for projects.  
  • Modelling demand versus supply and the end-to-end systems to understand the full economics of hydrogen production and distribution to client sites.  
  • Managing power, water and land contracts.  

​​Government relationships and subsidy applications  

  • Supporting the development of relationships with key local and national government stakeholders.  
  • Leading and feeding into relevant government consultations and stakeholder events.  
  • Managing the applications for subsidy support to develop and deliver projects.  

 Supply chain and partnerships 

  • Building relationships with partners, suppliers, distributors and vendors.  
  • Proposing and developing strategic partnerships.  
  • Providing advice on product development, distribution, and promotion strategies.  

 ​Knowledge, Experience & Technical Know How:    

  • Proven track record of working at a senior level within a business development or commercial role  
  • Expert, in-depth knowledge of the energy market in the UK and the specific challenges of the transition to Net-Zero.  
  • Strong ability to develop and maintain relationships with clients and shareholders from all backgrounds and sectors.  
  • Understanding and experience of developing and using the commercial and financial models and tools required to evaluate the commercial viability of opportunities.  
  • A good understanding of the supply chains necessary for green hydrogen projects and key features of the commercial and operational challenges for both service providers and end users.  
  • Proficient in tracking and researching emerging markets and trends, and the ability to translate this into potential opportunities for the business.  
  • Experience of working in a small team environment to deliver high-profile, high-priority projects to time, cost, and quality.  
  • Highly organised and administratively efficient.  
  • A driven, self-motivated attitude with the ability to work on your own initiative.  
  • Acts in an independent and professional manner with good influencing skills.  
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills both verbal and written.  
  • Working experience within the green energy industry is desirable.
